My first trip to Walt Disney World was when I was nine years old. I have loved Disney as far back as I can remember, but this trip brought out something in me that I had never experienced before, a want to work for a company. But this wasn’t just any company. This was the company that granted happiness to millions and millions of people each year. When we left that magical place and I gazed out the window in the backseat of my parents van at the “See ya real soon” signs, my two immediate questions were, “When can we come back?” and “When can I work here as a princess?” Little did I know, eleven years later I would be applying for my first Disney College Program where I would be working as not a princess, but a custodian. Now to talk about one of my favorite parts of the entire program- Going to the parks! When you’re not working or you’re lucky and get off work at a decent time, you do get to go to the parks for free as a Disney employee. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Disney World, this is kind of a big deal. Normally, going to one park would be over 100 dollars for an all-day ticket and 20 dollars for parking. That’s just for one park. If you wanted a park hopper, that’s also going to be over 100 dollars. I got into any park on Disney property for free and got parking for free. That first time that I got to go to the parks to play with my roommates our first week was something I will never forget. We got there right as the fireworks show was going off and watching them around thousands of happy guests, knowing that we were about to work for this amazing company was something so special. That first day by myself was really weird. I didn’t really know what to do. I had my pan and broom with me. I remember the first guests I helped out with. As I was walking up to Gorilla Falls, or Pangani, as all of the cast members would call it, I was stopped by this older couple heading towards the main part of Africa. “Where is the train??” They asked me. I stopped and said, “Hmm. I actually don’t know…” I pulled out a park map, and wondered what the heck they were talking about. I said to them, “You know what, why don’t you folks follow me and we’ll find it together?” They had told us in Custodial core that we could do this, so I thought why not? And there it was, two feet away from where we were standing. Rafikis Planet Watch train station. “I believe this is what you all are looking for?” “Oh yes! Thank you so much!” They said, and they smiled and went on their way. I walked away feeling accomplished and happy that I was able to help someone, even in the smallest way possible....
